Well there are a lot of programs out there now that lets you make pc to pc calls for free, but there are not many that let you make pc to land line calls for free.

I have started using www.freecall.com you sign up and download software and you can make up to 300 minutes of phone calls per week! There are lots of free countries to call and the sound is fantastic. This all depends on your internet connection of course and also your equipment you use. I use a usb phone to make my calls and no one can tell that I am using the internet to make the call. The number shows up on their call display as a local number, but no name. The person can not call you back on the number since this is free outgoing only.

If you are looking to receive free incoming calls on your computer www.freedigits.com offers that along with some free outgoing minutes. I can’t tell you how many free outgoing minutes because I could never log in once I have signed up. The call quality is also great.

Are you still using your regular phone line, but thinking about switching to VOIP? I made the switch to VOIP about a year ago and I chose to use Vonage Canada. Here in Canada there were a few VOIP providers and I chose Vonage because of the price and features that were included. I chose the $39.99 (plus taxes) package, this includes unlimited calling to anywhere in North America, Puerto Rico, the U.K, France, Italy, and Spain.Calling Features that are included:3-way calling, call return, Anonymous call blocking, Do not Disturb, Call Transfer, Caller ID Block, 911 Service, Repeat Dialing, Voice mail plus, click 2 call, Vonage Me, Vonage Fax and Call Forward plus many more. You also have access to the Vonage Dash board where you can see who has called you and what calls you have made.I enjoy the click 2 call feature, and it is free. You can use it either with Outlook or hi-light a number and press F6, your phone will ring and then it will connect your call. I use the Vonage Me feature (still in Alpha Mode). I can’t get a local phone number for my area so I put have a link in my e-mail signature that anyone can click on and enter their phone number and they call me for free (North America numbers only). Vonage also has Vonage Fax, you can send a fax to any number without a fax machine.Vonage offers virtual numbers, soft phone (with 500 outgoing minutes per month) and toll free numbers all at an additional charge. When you sign up with Vonage you can keep your old number if available, you can get a “free adapter” or upgrade to better one. You can also travel with your Vonage adapter, you just need a high-speed connection. I have been very happy with the service that I have been receiving from Vonage. People complain about the customer service that is provided, but I haven’t had a problem with it.There are lots of VOIP providers in the United States, but not many in Canada. Some other ones in Canada are with Primus and also cable companies. Do some research, but the best research you can do is ask another VOIP user what they use.

Well here we are again showing you how to manage all your phone numbers with just one phone number and it is free.  Now instead of giving everyone your home number, and cell phone number you can give them one phone number that is linked to all the numbers you want.I found a free service that is in Beta format called GrandCentral, you sign up when you receive an invitition from a fellow GrandCentral user or if GrandCentral sends out an invitation.  You can choose a number from almost anywhere in the Untited States.  You forward your home phone, business phone and cell phone (charges may apply depending on your plans).  I have forwarded my Vonage phone number (free service) to my free soft phone number I received from  Freedigits.com I live in Canada so I can’t expect family and friends to call a long distance number so I just forwarded my Vonage line and no one knows that it is done.  When you get access to the dashboard page of GrandCentral you can import all your contacts from your address book and categorise  your contacts into friends, family, work and other.  Once your phone rings and the contact is in your Grand Central address book you get the announcement “Jim Jones” you can either press 1 to accept the call, 2 send to voice mail, 3, send to voicemail and listen in or 4 to record the call (caller is informed the call is going to be recorded).  Say you get those annoying phone calls from tele-marketers you can go back in to your dashboard and block that number forever or you can even have a message play “this number has been disconnected” For your voicemail with Grand Central, you can also have it set up depending on the category your contacts are set up.  You can have a separate voice mail for family members, say you are gone on vacation, you can actually say Hi, we are gone on vacation will be back on Friday night.  Now you wouldn’t want anyone to know that you are gone on vacation so for friends you would have a different message.  You can also set Grand Central to send all your call directly to voice mail and also receive an email stating that you have an email and can be in wav format. There is a click to call feature, but it isn’t free.  When you sign up you get a $3.00 credit towards this feature.  You open your Grand Central address book or call log and click on the number.  Your phone will ring you answer it and then the call is put through without you dialing.  Web Call, I have this on my website and also in my email signature.  Person clicks on the link, enters their phone number and the call is put through for free.   This is a good feature because it hides your phone number from the caller, this can be even used on MySpace. For more information on this Beta project (now owned by Google) visit www.grandcentral.com

Well I do a lot of traveling around the world and staying in touch with home can be expensive.  I have done a lot of searching online on how to make free phone calls, both from home and while on the road. Now I will start with using your home phone and calling.  For me I have dropped my regular phone company (Bell Canada) to use Vonage.  I haven’t had any problems using Vonage, and almost been using it for a year.  With Vonage I can call any number in North America and that includes Hawaii and Alaska and also the Yukon. I can also call the U.K, Ireland, France, Spain and Italy for free.  My cable company has finally brought their digital phone to our area, but no free calling to selective European countries. Now for me to call other countries I use a FREE service called Yak4Ever.com once you go to this website you need to register with your email address and the phone number that you will be using to make these phone calls.  Once you have registered you can put up to 10 phone numbers from 45 selective countries.  You get a U.S based phone number that you have to dial and then enter the extension number 1-10 and then press the #sign and your phone call is connected.  You get an email with all instructions and they tell you it takes 24 hours to have the numbers activated.  You will require your call display be available and you have to call from the phone you had set up it.  I have tried this service and I am very happy with the product.  Now before I go away I find the hotel phone numbers and update the page.  Since I can make unlimited phone calls in North America this call doesn’t cost me a thing. Now you are asking, how can I make free phone calls from my computer.  Well there are a bunch of programs to do this, but I am not talking about those PC to PC phone calls, my wife doesn’t want to be tied down to a computer waiting for my phone call.  I downloaded a free soft phone from http://www.counterpath.com/index.php?menu=download and then I headed on over to www.freedigits.com and there I received a free U.S based phone number.  I can now receive unlimited incoming phone calls for FREE!  I am given 60 free minutes for outgoing calls, but I have a work around for that also. For those of you who have switched to Vonage then this is how you can make a free phone call from your free soft phone to your home Vonage phone.  With Vonage they have a feature called Vonage Me, I have a link on my website and also in my signature line in my e-mail.  I click on this link: https://v-me.vonage.com/rosscraig1 (as a Vonage user set your Vonage Me Tag here: http://me.vonage.com/) then enter my free U.S number I got from freedigits.com it rings my computer and then rings my Vonage home phone and I am talking for free.

I found this site by watching a great Tech TV show called The Lab With Leo.  This show is available only in Canada on G4TechTV.  I figured I am a tech savy guy and spend a lot of time online trying to find how to do things for free or make things better.  Through my Blog entries I will try to pass on things that I have found to make things go easier or even better for less money, sometimes free.
